SUMMARY:Demonstrating Bio-based Solutions for Rural Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) is continuing its series of stakeholder engagement events to discuss a number of important topics featured in ‘Our Rural Future – Ireland’s Rural Development Policy 2021-2025’. \nThe theme of this event is: Demonstrating Biobased Solutions for Rural Communities \nIreland’s first National Bioeconomy Action Plan was published in 2023. It has a strong focus on bringing sustainable scientific practices\, technologies\, and biobased innovation into use in Ireland\, containing 33 actions across seven pillars. \nThe Plan aims to further develop Ireland’s bioeconomy\, in social\, economic and policy terms\, in the period 2023 to 2025\, particularly increasing awareness and understanding of the bioeconomy more broadly. \nIt will ensure support for the goal of moving biobased innovation and solutions from research to sustainable and circular industrial production with accelerated pace\, and will support greater investment in demonstrating the bioeconomy\, providing exemplars\, and ensuring support for interactions and progress among multiple actors\, including in local communities\, businesses\, primary producers\, scientific communities\, policymakers\, social movements\, and interest groups. \nThis forum is scheduled to coincide with Bioeconomy Ireland Week\, an annual event held to highlight and raise awareness of Ireland’s rapidly growing bioeconomy\, with awareness raising initiatives involving industry\, local communities\, producers\, researchers and students throughout Ireland. \nThe event will provide an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities that impact on rural communities and economies. SUMMARY:Demonstrating Bio-based Solutions for a Greener Ireland
DESCRIPTION:In this event\, the outcomes of the InformBio project will be demonstrated. \nInformBio aims to deliver a Bioeconomy Foresight Analysis providing a clear roadmap towards a sustainable bioeconomy for Ireland\, along with the tools to rigorously measure progress towards this objective. It combines data driven research\, analysis\, and modelling with input from expert thematic groups\, ensuring robust and informed outcomes for industry\, policy makers and other relevant groups. \nBy integrating biomass mapping\, value-chain analysis\, life-cycle assessment and scenario modelling\, the project\, for the first time\, attempts to quantify the potential of the bioeconomy to contribute to Ireland’s climate and sustainability targets. \nMoreover\, the project positions Ireland as a front-runner among EU member states\, by developing a prototype national bioeconomy monitoring system\, enabling stakeholders to track the development and progress of the national bioeconomy against key bioeconomy indicators. \nLogin here.

DESCRIPTION:During this session\, we will engage with representatives from companies\, key experts and investors to explore available funding instruments as well as the challenges and gaps for scaling innovation. Discussions will focus on how to achieve better alignment between companies and investors. Three bio-economy relevant companies will share their experiences in securing finance and discuss what enabled them to secure scaling funding and where they faced challenges. Additionally\, investors active in the field will provide insights into their funding instruments\, and what they look for in companies. It’s a show that’s fun for you\, and good for the planet! We believe that every individual and their community can be part of a solution to climate change. \nThe show holds space for audience members to speak up and/or be interviewed. These source materials are used by international improvisation experts to inspire scenes\, songs and sketches that are unique to each show and community. \nThe performance will start at 2pm – after the performance and a quick break\, we will then host a fun and informal workshop where you can chat about the challenges to living more sustainably in your area and learn what you can do both as an individual and with your community to have a positive impact on the environment. We will share some simple eco changes you can make in your daily life such as reducing plastic\, how to be more sustainable with your clothes and the benefits of climate friendly food choices. You will come away more informed and empowered on how to take action on climate by living more sustainably. \nWe Built This City on Rock and Coal is a recipient of the Creative Climate Action fund\, an initiative from the Creative Ireland Programme. SUMMARY:Farmer Involvement in the Bioeconomy – What’s Happening in Ireland and Europe
DESCRIPTION:This online event hosted by The Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS) will focus on developments in the bioeconomy which offer potential opportunities for farmers here in Ireland. The event will run from 10am to 12.15 pm on Thursday\, October 17th and will be moderated by Damien O’Reilly\, European Affairs and Communications Manager\, ICOS. The mornings proceedings will explore possible solutions to the challenges that face farming from emission reduction targets to nutrient management and storage and water quality. These diversification opportunities may present a pathway to a more resilient future and should also deliver economic benefit. The speakers and agenda should be of interest to farmers\, advisors\, co-operatives and agribusinesses as well as those concerned with the environmental and economic sustainability of our agri-food system. Topics will include the latest policy developments\, the immediate opportunities that processed manures present\, the potential of anaerobic digestion at scale (Danish example)\, cooperative bioeconomy developments in France\, an update on recent announcements Farm Zero C and ICOS Skillnet activities.

DESCRIPTION:The TU Dublin School of Food Science and Environmental Health will host an activity-based event in the Central Quad labs (Grangegorman campus) lab on Friday 18th of October. There will be a variety of agri-food related applications of bioeconomy including demonstrations and hand on activities. DESCRIPTION:Come to the National Botanic Gardens and learn about all the new technologies scientists are developing from wood! \nAs part of Bioeconomy Ireland Week\, PhD researchers from the innovative ‘NxtGenWood‘ Project will come together to engage the public in the latest wood and tree related research. Eight researchers\, stationed around the gardens\, will present their innovative research in three minutes with the help of engaging physical props. This unique event will allow you to interact directly with researchers and chat about their work in an informal and scenic setting. DESCRIPTION:We Built This City on Rock and Coal brings scientists and theatre-makers to the rural west of Ireland for a co-created comedy show driven by hopepunk\, climate research\, music\, and what matters most to the local community. It’s a show that’s fun for you\, and good for the planet! We believe that every individual and their community can be part of a solution to climate change. \nThe show holds space for audience members to speak up and/or be interviewed. These source materials are used by international improvisation experts to inspire scenes\, songs and sketches that are unique to each show and community. \nThe performance will start at 2pm – after the performance and a quick break\, we will then host a fun and informal workshop where you can chat about the challenges to living more sustainably in your area and learn what you can do both as an individual and with your community to have a positive impact on the environment. We will share some simple eco changes you can make in your daily life such as reducing plastic\, how to be more sustainable with your clothes and the benefits of climate friendly food choices. You will come away more informed and empowered on how to take action on climate by living more sustainably. \nWe Built This City on Rock and Coal is a recipient of the Creative Climate Action fund\, an initiative from the Creative Ireland Programme. DESCRIPTION:About the Digital Launch\nInterdisciplinary Research at ATU Powering Ireland’s Bioeconomy\nAtlantic Technological University (ATU) is proud to announce the launch of its new ATU\nResearch Showcase series. The first edition “Meet ATU’s Bioeconomy Innovators” will\ncoincide with Bioeconomy Ireland Week 2025 (13–19 October). The Showcase will consist of\na booklet publication\, developed by ATU’s new Research Coordinator team and funded\nthrough TU RISE\, highlighting the pioneering work of 12 researchers and innovators across\nATU who are shaping a more sustainable\, circular and resilient future. \n \n  \nFrom valorising waste into new value chains to reimagining farming systems and advancing\nsolutions in marine\, energy\, engineering\, food systems and nanotechnology\, the booklet\nillustrates how ATU research is delivering real-world impact for communities\, industries and\necosystems. \n“As Research Coordinators\, we see first-hand the breadth of expertise and commitment\nacross ATU\,” said Dr. Shane Conway and Dr. James Britton. “This campaign is about putting a\nspotlight on the people behind ATU’s bioeconomy research. By showcasing just a sample of\nour colleagues’ work\, we aim to strengthen ATU’s profile as a leader in this strategically\nimportant field\, and connect our researchers with partners across Ireland\, Europe and\nbeyond.” \nNational and European Collaboration\nAs the technological university for the west and north-west of Ireland\, ATU grounds its\ninnovation in regional and national priorities. Through alignment with the Northern &\nWestern Regional Assembly’s Smart Specialisation Strategy (S3)\, ATU contributes to\nstrengths in Agri-Food ; Agri-Tech\, the Marine & Blue Economy\, Renewable Energy &\nClimate Action\, and the Circular Economy transition\, while also connecting to emerging\nopportunities in biotechnology\, nanotechnology and digital transformation. \nATU’s role is further reinforced through participation in major national and European\ninitiatives. In July 2022\, ATU researchers Prof. Graham Heaslip\, Dr. Edna Curley\, Dr. James\nMoran; Dr. Trevor Clohessy became members of BiOrbic\, Ireland’s Research Ireland-funded Bioeconomy Research Centre\, a national collaboration of more than 100 researchers advancing the\ncircular bioeconomy through interdisciplinary academia–industry partnerships. At European\nlevel\, ATU researchers lead and contribute to Horizon Europe Cluster 6 and ERA-NET BlueBio\nprojects\, positioning the university as a bioeconomy hub on the Atlantic coast. \nShowcasing Interdisciplinary Expertise\nThe 12 featured researchers represent only a sample of ATU’s bioeconomy expertise. Their\nselection spans multiple campuses and faculties\, demonstrating the university’s\ninterdisciplinary strengths. Many other colleagues across ATU are also making significant\ncontributions to the bioeconomy\, and their work is equally valued. \nFeatured Researchers and Areas of Expertise\nThe featured researchers include experts in areas such as : \n\nCircular economy and renewable energy (Leo Murray\, Mel Gavin\, Prof. Upaka\nRathnayake\, Dr. Yan Jiang)\nMarine biotechnology and aquaculture innovation (Dr. Nicolas Touzet\, Dr. Colin\nHannon)\nSustainable construction and resource efficiency (Dr. Conan O’Ceallaigh\, Dr. Mark\nKelly)\nFood innovation and cultural acceptance of novel proteins (Dr. Maria Dermiki)\nNanotechnology for clean fuels (Prof. Suresh C. Pillai)\nDigital transformation and blockchain (Dr. Trevor Clohessy)\nSensor technology for agriculture and peatland restoration (Dr. Denis McCrudden)\n\n \nBuilding a Sustainable Future Through Collaboration\nTogether\, these innovators demonstrate how ATU research contributes to Ireland’s\nbioeconomy transition\, while connecting the university’s expertise to global sustainability\ngoals. In addition to its research and innovation efforts\, ATU’s commitment to sustainability is\nreinforced through its role in the EU GREEN European University Alliance\, a network of nine\nEuropean universities dedicated to advancing sustainability\, innovation\, and societal\nresponsibility.
