SUMMARY:Green Enterprise: Innovation for a Circular Economy
DESCRIPTION:To mark Bioeconomy Week Ireland 2020\, we’re pleased to invite you to the EPA’s Green Enterprise: Innovating for a Circular Economy* webinar where we will share the findings of the following three bioeconomy projects: \n  \n\nSymbioBeer\n\nIrish Manufacturing Research (IMR) facilitated an Industrial Symbiosis innovation demonstration pilot between St Mel’s Brewery and Panelto Food called SymbioBeer. Waste bread was utilised as a substitute for virgin malt to create a new beer and subsequently a new bread was produced using outputs from beer production closing multiple resource loops (bread to beer to bread). In addition\, IMR conducted a feasibility study exploring the wider industrial symbiosis opportunities in the Longford area. \n\nHexafly\n\nHexafly developed an innovative way of breeding insects on an industrial scale utilizing Bio-Conversion technology to achieve maximum extraction of high value protein and oil products for the aquaculture\, animal feed and plant nutrition industries.  Hexafly has one input (distillery by product ) and multiple outputs e.g. live larvae for poultry\, dried larvae for wild bird feed\, insect oil for animal feed\, insect protein for aqua feed and pet feed. \n\nCyberColloids:\n\nThe overall objective of this project was to evaluate the potential to recover and utilise the biomass generated in fruit and vegetable supply chains for the production of new food fibre ingredients. A scoping study was carried out to identify commercially relevant sources of key fruit and vegetable biomass streams with the potential for upgrade. Selected biomass streams were then utilised for the production and evaluation of new food ingredients. \nThis is a free online event which will take place via Microsoft Teams from 10am-11am on Thursday 22nd October. DESCRIPTION:Grassland and green shrubs cover 21% of the total surface area of the EU-28 and as such are a key element of the regions’ landscape and biodiversity. Today\, grass as a resource remains underutilised. It is often left to decay after mowing and thus incurs costs and fails to capitalise on the potential benefits available for individuals and society. \nThe EU-funded project GO-GRASS is determined to harness this overlooked potential by developing circular business models based on the exploitation of grass resources\, thereby contributing to nutrient recovery\, reducing the dependency on fossil fuels\, and creating benefits to strengthen rural communities. \nAs part of EU Green Week 2020\, which aims to emphasise the contribution biodiversity can make to society and the economy\, this online event will explore the untapped potential of Europe’s grasslands. \nThe first session will demonstrate a range of innovative and cost-effective processes and technologies to transform grass into valuable bio-based products. The second session will afford stakeholders the opportunity to discuss various tools and resources that can foster the deployment of sustainable grassland management practices and circular business models across the EU. \nJoin our event to share your views and explore the circular business practices that will shape tomorrow’s rural economies.

DESCRIPTION:The Agricultural Consultants Association (ACA) provide farm advice to 55\,000 Irish farmer clients.  They\nhave 270 professional advisors including 11 forestry consultants with a network of 161 offices throughout\nIreland.  The ACA will hold a members roadshow to help the private agricultural advisory community\nprepare for the next Common Agricultural Policy reform that is underway at present.  The CAP reform\ncontains a specific objective to promote employment\, growth\, social inclusion and local development in\nrural areas\, including bio-economy and sustainable forestry.  It also contains a cross-cutting objective of\nmodernising the agri-food sector by the fostering and sharing of knowledge\, innovation and digitalisation\nin agriculture and rural areas and encouraging their uptake.  At the ACA roadshow during Bioeconomy\nIreland Week 2020 Patrick Barrett\, Agricultural Inspector\, Department of Agriculture\, Food and the\nMarine with responsibilities in relation to bioeconomy\, AKIS & Agri-Digitalisation will present an overview\non Agri-digitalisation\, the circular bioeconomy and the role of Agricultural Knowledge & Innovation\nSystems (AKIS) in a modern farming era to ACA members.
