SUMMARY:Biopesticides and Biostimulants for Crop Production
DESCRIPTION:The aim of this workshop is to engage stakeholders in a discussion about the use of biobased fertilisers and biopesticides in Irish agriculture. The workshop will feature short presentations from researchers working on testing the efficacy\, environmental impact and economic feasibility of biobased products in barley growth. These researchers are part of the Department of Agriculture\, Food & Marine-funded project BioCrop and the Earth Institute strategic priority SAPBio\, a cross-disciplinary team of scientists working to investigate the use of and attitudes to bioproducts as alternatives to conventional inputs for crop production in Ireland through sustainable agriculture. \nTo register for the event email: olga.lastovetsky@ucd.ie \n

SUMMARY:The Plastic Problem: An Irish Perspective for a Global Challenge
DESCRIPTION:How can we deal with the plastic pollution in the environment and ensure that future needs are met more sustainably?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlastics have been detected in nearly every ecosystem in the world. They poison wildlife\, make their way into the food chain to affect human health and yet we seem unable to move away from our dependence on plastic. This panel discussion will explore the depth of the problem and outline some ways in which Irish researchers are working to solve these global challenges \nModerator: Dr Margaret Fournet – Assistant Director: Materials Research Institute\, Principal Investigator\, Lecturer & EU Project Coordinator\, Technological University of the Shannon\, Athlone \nPanellists: \nDr Liam Morrison – Professor in Department of Natural Science\, National University of Ireland\, Galway \nDr Catherine Collins – Research Fellow\, Shannon ABC\, Technological University of the Shannon\, Limerick \nDr Fionn O’Fearghail – Researcher\, Centre for Radiation and Environmental Science\, TU Dublin \nNeil Skeffington – CEO\, Novelplast \nMs Emily Marsh – Bioeconomy Project Manager\, Circbio\, Shannon ABC\, Munster Technological University\, Kerry. \n\nRegister via this LINK

SUMMARY:Origin Green - How can the bioeconomy support the Pathways to Net Zero initiative?
DESCRIPTION:Origin Green\, Ireland’s national food and drink sustainability programme\, has published new procedures and guidelines that put carbon emission targets on a mandatory footing for food and drink manufacturers as the sector seeks to accelerate its contribution to the Programme for Government’s aim of carbon neutrality by 2050. \nThis marks a significant shift for the Origin Green programme and will see member companies go beyond reductions of energy-related emissions\, to include a more comprehensive assessment of their entire carbon footprint\, including value chain emissions which incorporates all indirect emissions (scope 3) associated with food manufacturing e.g. freight\, travel. \nThis one-hour event will focus on how companies who develop a bioeconomy approach as part of its sustainability and innovation strategies can address its carbon emissions.  It will also highlight funding & finance opportunities that can support such considerations. \n\nWelcome and introduction – Deirdre Ryan\, Director of Origin Green\nOverview of the Bioeconomy and sustainability opportunities – Kevin O’Connor\, Director of BiOrbic\, Bioeconomy SFI Research Centre\nOrigin Green Member bioeconomy experience and lessons learnt – TBD\nBioeconomy funding supports available to Origin Green members: Cathal Fitzgerald\, Head of Food and Agricultural Investments NTMA-ISIF and Alexa Toomey\, Department Manager Dairy\, Beverages & Food FDI
