The Cost of Not Developing a Circular Bioeconomy: Perspectives informed by carbon accounting and foresight

analysis

16.10.2025 | 10:00–11:30 Irish Time/11:00-12:30 CET | (ONLINE)

Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions are projected to decline by just 23% by 2030 (relative to
2018), falling short of legislative targets. This underperformance will bring economic as well
as environmental consequences for the country, in the form of compliance costs and
reputational damage. Agriculture and land use account for over 40% of national emissions,
and the sector is in need of development pathways which support farmers and rural
communities in transitioning to a more environmentally sustainable, but economically viable
economy. This webinar, co-organised by the InformBio and FORESIGHT projects, aims to
explore the potential role of circular bioeconomy for the future development of Ireland’s land
sector, in line with climate neutrality, biodiversity and socio-economic objectives – thus
helping to mitigate the risks facing Ireland’s agri-food sector. New research findings and
panel discussion among international experts from carbon accounting, technical and policy
domains will elucidate key issues around future deployment of a negative emission
bioeconomy.
